The scenes outside Parliament were ugly... but it's Sir Keir Starmer's nasty party that's put the poison into politics
The scenes were certainly ugly: just yards from the House of Commons, a mob was jeering at Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer.
‘Traitor!’ they screamed. ‘Why did you go after Julian Assange?’
There were cries of: ‘What happened to the working man, Mr Starmer? What about the working class? Is Labour a party of the elites?’
One protester wore a maple-leaf hat in solidarity with Canada’s lorry drivers, who are currently mired in anti-lockdown protests.
Another screamed: ‘Don’t take the poison!’ – by which he presumably meant the life-saving Covid jabs. It was, in all, a ragtag list of complaints from a distinctly ragtag group.
Yet one slur from this mob on Monday shook the Left to apoplexy.
This was when a protester accused Starmer of ‘protecting paedophiles’ and shouted at him: ‘Jimmy Savile!’
For this, according to the outraged liberal commentariat, only one figure was to blame: Boris Johnson.
‘Angry MPs blame Johnson’s “poison” after anti-vaxxers set upon Starmer’ shrieked yesterday’s front-page headline on The Guardian.
Labour’s Chris Bryant, chairman of the Commons standards committee, opined: ‘We know how this plays out when politicians go down this deeply cynical route, because we saw it in the US. It is exactly the same as Donald Trump’s playbook.’
Arguing that Boris ‘incited the mob’, Bryant said: ‘Political poison has an effect: Johnson has no moral compass.’
