Hezbollah Positioning Itself in Shiite Villages, Aiming 100,000 Rockets at Israel
Lebanese terror group Hezbollah is hiding 100,000 missiles in Shiite villages in southern Lebanon, a senior Israeli intelligence official announced Wednesday, making them potential targets should hostilities with Israel renew. The official spoke to the Associated Press on condition of anonymity, in keeping with military regulations.
The official showed reporters satellite photos of what Israel believes are Hezbollah positions in dozens of villages in southern Lebanon. The media were banned from printing the images, which were covered in red markers indicating missile launchers, arms depots, underground tunnels and command posts.
As much as one third of certain villages are thought to be Hezbollah assets. Some 200 villages, the official noted, had been turned into these “military strongholds.”
The massive arsenal of rockets and advanced weapons includes thousands which could hit Tel Aviv. Some even have a range which could reach anywhere in the country. The arms mostly arrived through Syria, supplied by the war-torn country’s beleaguered government and Iran.
Should war break out and Hezbollah fire rockets on Israel, Israel’s air force would target those weapons, placing the civilians in those villages at risk. The official added that residents would be given time to evacuate.
In 2006, 1,200 Lebanese, including hundreds of civilians, and 160 Israelis were killed in a month-long war which also severely damaged Lebanese infrastructure. Although tensions remain high and could potentially erupt any time, it is thought Hezbollah has no interest in fighting Israel while it is focused on backing ally Bashar Assad in Syria.
