Gaza Shall Be Forsaken

The Gaza Strip, was originally part of the inheritance the LORD allotted to the tribe of Judah. But Philistines invaded and built their five cities in the area, Gaza, Ashdod, Gath, Akron, and Askelon. Eventually King David defeated the Philistines and Judah possessed the land until the Babylonian captivity, the return and finally the Roman diaspora. 
Nearly 20 centuries later, once again the Gaza is occupied, this time by Arabs who call themselves Philistines (ie Palestinians), and whose dubious claim to the land God gave the tribe of Juda, is supported by the ‘world community’. As Israel resists the provocative rain of missiles from Gaza upon her own citizens, I believe it fitting to re publish an article (and an excerpt from an upcoming book I am writing about the Muslim nations in Bible prophecy. 

Gather yourselves together, yea, gather together, O nation not desired; Before the decree bring forth, before the day pass as the chaff, before the fierce anger of the LORD come upon you, before the day of the LORD’s anger come upon you. Seek ye the LORD, all ye meek of the earth, which have wrought his judgment; seek righteousness, seek meekness: it may be ye shall be hid in the day of the LORD’s anger. For Gaza shall be forsaken, and Ashkelon a desolation: they shall drive out Ashdod at the noon day, and Ekron shall be rooted up. Woe unto the inhabitants of the sea coast, the nation of the Cherethites! the word of the LORD is against you; O Canaan, the land of the Philistines, I will even destroy thee, that there shall be no inhabitant. And the sea coast shall be dwellings and cottages for shepherds, and folds for flocks.(Zephaniah 2:1-5)

The eyes of the world were riveted upon two events in late August of 2005. On August 22 The Gaza eviction was accomplished, in which the Government of Israel, pressured by the United States forcibly removed the remaining Jewish presence in the Gaza strip and in four settlements of the West Bank. In some cases bodies were disinterred from graves, to be reburied in Israeli occupied land.
The world watched a self-imposed Jewish exile, over the tearful protests of Jewish home and business owners, to make room for a Palestinian state as dictated by the U.N.. Thriving businesses were left behind, only to completely trashed by the “Palestinian” occupants of the vacated towns and cities, as were the remaining Jewish cemeteries.The Gaza is now being used as a staging area for rocket attacks on the rest of Israel.

One week to the day later, August 29,2005,  hurricane Katrina made landfall in and on America’s Gulf coast,  rendering tens of thousands of Americans homeless, and the disinterment of bodies out of cemeteries. Katrina wreaked havoc on the Presidency of George Bush that up to then was considered successful.
Although  the U.N., The European Union, the United States Government, and Russia, all insist on the creation of a Palestinian state in the midst of the Holy land that God gave to the seed of Abraham,Isaac and Jacob, the God of the Bible doesn’t desire one.
Could the Gaza/West Bank,  artificially imposed “Palestinian state”, be the “nation not desired” in Zephaniah?

Commentaries say no, for the most part, they claim that the “nation not desired” is Judah, but the Hebrew word for nation, in the Zephaniah passage  is e-Gui, the word transliterated as Goy, that is  the word ‘gentile”, or  nation.
The word of God has much to say about the future of Gaza, the nation currently run by a popularly elected terrorist group, Hamas, and the focal point of the world’s attempt to divide the Holy Land into a “two state solution’ to the middle east conflict.
Gaza has been designated by the U.N. as part of the homeland of the new Palestinian state. So also has the so-called “west Bank” of the Jordan River, biblically called Judea and Samaria. Since the Israeli Government has forced the Jews who lived and traded there to leave, Gaza has been turned into a complete terrorist enclave, a staging place for terror raids, a persecutor of Jews and Christians.

Gaza  was recently in the news for the grisly street celebration held in the streets of her towns after an armed terror cell broke into a Jewish settler home in the West bank and slit the throats of a Father, an eleven year old boy a three-year old and an infant as they slept in their own beds. They then surprised the families mother, as she emerged from the bathroom, and murdered her in cold blood.
The response? Wild celebrations in the streets, passing out sweets and candies to neighbors, prayers and gunfire, a festive celebration! What sane nation would celebrate such atrocities?
Zechariah tells us that the celebration will one day be turned to agonizing fear for Gaza, after something happens to Syria, and to southern Lebanon, in the day when all eyes of men are turned to the LORD,

The burden of the word of the LORD in the land of Hadrach, and Damascus shall be the rest thereof: when the eyes of man, as of all the tribes of Israel, shall be toward the LORD. And Hamath also shall border thereby; Tyrus, and Zidon, though it be very wise. And Tyrus did build herself a strong hold, and heaped up silver as the dust, and fine gold as the mire of the streets.Behold, the LORD will cast her out, and he will smite her power in the sea; and she shall be devoured with fire.Ashkelon shall see it, and fear; Gaza also shall see it, and be very sorrowful, and Ekron; for her expectation shall be ashamed; and the king shall perish from Gaza, and Ashkelon shall not be inhabited.(Zechariah 9:1-5)

Something happens to Syria, particularly Damascus, which terrifies the hopes of Gaza, turning her citizens into streams of refugees. It involves southern Lebanon as well, which today is the stronghold of the Hezbollah terror group, and is also being used as a staging ground to rain rockets upon Israel.
There is no future for a Palestinian state in Gaza or the West banks in spite of the world’s desire. The world will soon see that the God of the Bible’s desire is all that really matters.

Greetings from the Land of Israel which, as I'm certain you have heard,is  currently under heavy enemy fire, especially in the Southern Region of the Negev. 

 

Last week, even before we heard it on the news, my little dog, Pepper, started acting strangely - walking with his tail down, and wanting to sit on our laps, refusing to leave our side as if he was scared of something only he could sense.  It was only later that we found out about all the rockets and missiles being fired on Israel, even as close as the out 

 

Please keep Timothy's new bride, Victoria, in your prayers for safety under the shelter of God's wings, as she is yet to be released from the army; and she is stationed in this Southern area near Be'er Sheva as a heavy truck driver.  Please pray she will be released to join Timothy  as his wife in Haifa in God's perfect timing, despite the challenge of  Israeli bureaucracy.

 

Thank you for keeping all the people of Israel and the young men and women of the IDF in your prayers.  Since the barrage of missile and rocket attacks that have been fired from Gaza into Israel, Israel has begun Operation Pillar of Defense.  Note that this is a 'defensive' operation ; and not an offensive one, despite how the media tried to portray small 'David' as the aggressor against a poor, pitiful, defenceless Goliath.

 

Israel has a right to defend its citizens and to ensure its survival, as decreed in the Book of Esther:

 

"...the King permitted the Jews who were in every city to gather togethre and protet their lives - to destroy...all the forces of any people that would assault them...."  (Esther 9:11)

 

No longer will be led like sheep to the slaughter as in the Holocaust.  We are back in our Land, never again to be uprooted from this Land God has given us. Halleluyah!

 

 

Thank you for being like an Esther, to petition the King  for our salvation and for victory over all those who seek to harm us.  We thank God for providing this place of refuge for us and for all Jewish people.  This week is 'aliyah week'.  May Jewish people from all the nations hear God's call to come home and trust God to defend us.

 

I love this courage and faith of the Israeli Defence Forces and am reminded of this Scripture, "In that day, Adonai will defend the inhabitants of Yirushalayim; the one who is feeble among them in that day shall be like David and the house of David shall be like Elohim, like the angel of Adonai before them." (Zech. 12:8)

 

Thank you also for the flood of encouragement, prayer and support that has been coming in from God's people in the nations to Israel in our time of need. 

 

You are like a Ruth, a faithful friend,  to  Naomi who has come back to her Land; so I want to thank you for your commitment to stand with us and with all Israel unto the very end.  May you receive your full reward by the God of Israel under whose wings you have come to take refuge.

 

Although we do not know where this conflict will lead, yet as Believers, we are instructed to 'fear not' and to keep our eyes fixed on Yeshua, the Living Word. 

 

And so I attach the Torah study for this Shabbat, Parashah Toldot (Generations) which is packed with insight and powerful revelations from the Ruach Hakodesh (Holy Spirit) for our lives.  May you be nourished, enriched and inpired by this Word out of Zion.

 News from Israel 13/11/12 – David Hoyle (Biblical Prophecy Foundation)

As the dust settles on the American election one thing alone remains certain that God is in control and working out His end time purposes according to His infallible word.

The pundits have come up with the predictions of what would happen if Mr Obama won a second term and are now busy predicting what the future may hold, not least for Israel.  One of my pastors years ago said, ‘We have the outline map of the end times, we fill in too much detail at our peril’.  This has been the mistake and still is of many end time interpreters but we must all remember that the Bible is our road map to the future and whilst we may legitimately take on board Matthew 16v1-3 and consider ‘the signs of the times’ we must beware of reading too much into what we see.

Our Jewish friends were keen for a Romney victory, not least because he stated that he would move the American embassy to Jerusalem, which taken in line with some of his other pro-Israel statements seem very encouraging.  However, it is predicted that John Kerry may become American Secretary of State and he is undoubtedly seen as sympathetic to Israel.

It is interesting to note that most American Jews seem to have voted for Obama while Israelis supported Romney.  Indeed Mr Netanyahu made a barely concealed gesture of support and commentators speculate that this could lead to Mr Obama supporting the opposition to Netanyahu in the January election.  Who he might support is questionable as even Israelis see no obvious alternative Prime Minister. 

Mr Obama has never had easy relations with Mr Netanyahu and it remains to be seen how things play out.  From an earthly standpoint America’s support for Israel’s security seems crucial particularly with the antagonism to Israel in Europe and not least in the UK where our leaders continue to berate Israel at every opportunity. This is no more than naked anti-Semitism, sanitised in different ways, but there to be discerned.

Looking at the Middle east, Europe, the nations generally, Israel in particular and the church there is no doubt whatsoever that the actors for the last great events in history are standing in the wings waiting for the curtain to go up, namely the rapture of the church followed by the great tribulation, second advent to the Mount of Olives and the establishment of God’s earthly kingdom centred on Jerusalem.  No wonder Jerusalem is a ‘stumbling block and cup of trembling to the nations’ Zechariah 12v1-2.

God will have the last word!  In al these things the message to us is clear, time is short and we need to get the message of the Gospel out loud and clear before it is too late.

IRAN Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has accused Israel of bluffing over the threat of air strikes against the country’s nuclear facilities and once more called in question the right of Israel to exist. He went on, ‘Israel has only occupied its territory for 60 to 70 years and has no roots there!  They have come into the picture recently and will be eliminated.’  Mr Netanyahu has made his position in relation to Iran clear and it remains to be seen what position Mr Obama will take now he is re-elected meantime Israel’s attack on a Sudanese weapons factory destroying a manufacturing plant for rockets being passed to Gaza for use against Israel has been described as a ‘dry run’ for a strike against Iran.  Sudan threatens to retaliate and Iranian warships have arrived in Port Sudan on the Red Sea in a show of support currently a proxy war is playing out between the Sudan’s and the arrival of Iranian warships may signal an escalation. Israel is an influential military and commercial ally of South Sudan since its independence whilst Iran is a strong supporter of the Khartoum.

SYRIA Israel has stated that it is ready to launch military action if Hezbollah militants try to move chemical weapons and long range ballistic missiles from Syria to Lebanon.  Ehud Barak voiced concern about the fate of Syria’s stock pile of weapons when President Assad falls, which is predicted for 2013.  Mr Barak said recently in London that the fate of Syria’s weapons is a critical issue for Britain, America and not least Israel.  My tour recently were on Mount Hermon and saw the advanced listening posts of Syria and Israel a few hundred yards apart over an area of no man’s land.  Sobering!

EGYPT Israel’s peace deal with Egypt is fraying under Egypt’s new leaders.  President Morsi is threatening to link the accord to a peace deal with the Palestinians.  He was blunt while speaking to the New York Times saying, ‘As long as peace and justice are not fulfilled for the Palestinians then the treaty remains unfulfilled’.  Egypt is struggling to control Jihadists and Bedouin smugglers in Sinai and with Israel’s agreement has increased its military presence there.

PALESTINIAN AUTHORITY The Authority is running desperately short of money and faces massive protests against the rising cost of living.  It is reported that President Abbas is considering cancelling the Oslo peace agreement that erected Palestinian autonomy.  This would put 2 million Palestinians in the autonomous West Bank (Judea and Samaria) back under Israeli control.  This would however be a problem for Israel creating financial and political difficulties.

Last year, Robert Serry, the UN special co-ordinator for the Middle East peace process warned that time was running out for the 20 year old Oslo accord. He said, ‘The Palestinians feel growing alienation towards the Oslo process’, and went on, ‘I hear many voices in Ramallah calling for the dismantling of the PA and to throw the keys back to Israel’.

Whilst in Israel, a Palestinian ‘Christian’ living in Samaria stated to me, ‘We were much better off under Israel’!

UK In an article in the Daily Telegraph Nabell Shaath put a twist on the current situation in the Middle East stating ‘Britain must atone for its sins in Palestine’!  He complained about Israel’s recognition by Britain but observed the UK had still not recognised a Palestinian state.

His description of the expelling of Christians and Muslims in 1948 to become refugees was a total distortion of the facts as was much else of the article.  Whilst blaming Britain for the Palestinian failure to establish a state he of course made no mention of the targeting of Israel’s civilians with thousands of rockets, glorification of terrorism on state television and seeking unilateral measures for recognition when they undertook not to do so under the Oslo accords  what blatant hypocrisy.

BERLIN At a meeting this week Britain, Germany and France joined in criticising Israel for its decision to build 1,200 new homes for settlers in East Jerusalem and the West Bank (Judea and Samaria). A British official described the move as provocative and Britain’s Middle East Minister Alistair Burt issued a very strong denunciation of the move, headlined in the Jewish Chronicle ‘Britain Lashes Out’!  How long before God ‘lashes out’ in judgement on the UK for its continuing anti-Semitism let alone the stance on legalised abortion.

BREAKING NEWS

1. The Israeli government has approved the immigration of the Bnei Menashe from India, although they must undergo conversion even though they have Jewish roots.
2. Anti-Israeli protesters have failed to stop performances by the Batsheva dance ensemble at the start of their UK tour.  Protestors in Bradford (almost an Islamic town) were swiftly dealt with!
3. It is officially confirmed that Israel’s leader ordered the army’s generals to prepare an attack on Iran’s nuclear sites which was opposed by the director of Mossad Meir Dagon and Gabi Ashkenazi, chief of the General Staff.
4. Following the death of 4 children in a deadly Islamic attack President Hollande said he would stamp out anti-Semitism in France.
5. A French court expelled an Imam for anti-Semitism and inciting violence.  He was arrested last week and deported! Why can we not do the same, what is the matter with our dreadful, weak-kneed politicians!  Muslim votes??

America Pronounces Judgement Upon Itself, ‘Things Are Going To Get Very Rough For The Next Four Years’

But let us not lament over how we thought or hoped the outcome should have been, but rather let us rejoice in the knowledge that God is in full control, that He who called us out of darkness has a plan that will one day bring light to all that we see happening in America and around the world, for the God who was our peace yesterday will still remain our peace tomorrow …

Isaiah 55:8-9, “‘For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways,’ declares the LORD. ’For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways And My thoughts than your thoughts.’”

America has decisively turned the corner away from the constitutional principles of limited government and self-government with the re-election of Barack Obama.
There may be no way home for us.
For those of us who fundamentally reject Obama’s policies, things are going to get very rough for the next four years. We have allowed our fellow Americans to pronounce judgment on the nation.
That’s what Obama represents to me – God’s judgment on a people who have turned away from Him and His ways and from everything for which our founders sacrificed their lives, their fortunes and their sacred honor.
The nation is divided like never before – intentionally so. That has been Obama’s game plan from the beginning – to build a constituency of special-interest groups that truly believe their salvation is found in bigger government, more programs, irresponsible spending and unconstitutional policies.
This election could very well represent the beginning of the end of the American Dream, American exceptionalism, the American way.
But it’s no time to give up – to throw up our hands in disgust and walk away from politics. Neither is it time to surrender to the radical social agenda Obama has championed to win his victory.
It’s time to change tactics.
It’s time to double-down and fight harder.
It’s time to raise our collective voices of outrage.
It’s time to form new alliances.
It’s time to form new communities of people who understand just how much Americans have been disenfranchised from our God-given rights and responsibilities.
But, at the end of the day, people generally get the kind of government they deserve.
When you turn away from the ways of God Almighty, this is what you should expect, if you are a student of the Bible and history.
I’m not going to lie to you.
I think things are going to get very tough in America over the next four years.
I expect more division, more stratification, maybe even the disintegration of the constitutional republic that was the envy of the world for so long.
It’s time to hunker down.
It’s time to prepare for the worst – economically, militarily, socially, culturally.
The revolutionaries have won a major political victory.
The America haters are running the country for another four years.
That is not a pretty prospect.
But it’s not time to retreat. It’s time for those of us who love what America has been for most of its history to gather our wits and begin the long march back.
Most of all, it’s time for collective repentance.
Only a miracle can save us – and we need to humble ourselves before God and pray hard for one.
Can we find our way home? Is the political system even viable for us anymore? Has our heritage of representative government been permanently robbed from us? Are our cultural institutions – from the press to the schools and universities to the major foundations and even our churches – let us down so badly that there is no hope of restoring the America we once knew and loved?
I don’t know the answers to these questions.
But we must not retreat. We must not hide. We must not be intimidated. We must not stop fighting for truth, justice and the American way.
Maybe we deserve this punishment for taking our lifestyles for granted. Maybe we deserve this judgment for our own individual and collective sins. Maybe there’s still time to turn things around because we serve a Creator of second and third chances.
One thing is for certain: Our national condition is going to get much worse before it gets better.” Source – WND.

Israeli PM Netanyahu 'ready' to order strike on Iran

Mr Netanyahu has failed to get Washington to agree to a "red line" for military action against Iran

The Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, has said he is ready to order a strike on Iran if international sanctions do not stop its nuclear programme.

"I am, of course, ready to press the button if necessary," he said.

Speaking on Israeli television, Mr Netanyahu also indicated Israel was prepared to act unilaterally.
His government has failed to get the US to set a clear "red line" for military action against Iran.
This has put a strain on relations with the administration of President Barack Obama.
Channel Two interviewed the prime minister as part of an investigative report detailing Israel's efforts to stop Iran from what it says is a drive to develop a nuclear weapon.
Iran insists its nuclear programme is purely for peaceful purposes.

"As long as I am prime minister, Iran will not have the atomic bomb” Benjamin Netanyahu

The Channel Two report said that in 2010, Mr Netanyahu and his defence minister, Ehud Barak, had given orders for the military to get ready to attack Iran within hours if required.

The programme described this as "the closest Israel has come to attacking Iran".
The orders were later withdrawn in the face of opposition from two top security officials at the time - chief-of-staff Lt Gen Gabi Ashkenazi and the head of the intelligence service, Mossad, Meir Dagan.
According to the programme Gen Ashkenazi considered such an attack on Iran, "a strategic mistake" because of the risk of a war, while Mr Dagan deemed it "illegal", saying a full cabinet decision was needed. Both men have since retired from their posts.

When Mr Netanyahu was asked about the reported exchanges he did not comment directly.
"In the final reckoning, the responsibility lies with the prime minister and as long as I am prime minister, Iran will not have the atomic bomb," he said.
"If there's no other way, Israel is ready to act."
In the documentary, there was also criticism of the handling of the Iranian nuclear threat from the former Israeli Prime Minister, Ehud Olmert. He suggested that the current government had jeopardised its close relationship with Washington.
Mr Olmert is considering making a political comeback ahead of a general election on 22 January.
Like its US ally, Israel has consistently refused to rule out a military option to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear bomb. It believes such a weapon would threaten its existence.

It is hard to envisage an Arab Knesset member declaring that “if something were to happen to Israel, this democracy that protects everyone, the whole Middle East would be doomed.”

But that is Aatef Karinaoui’s declared conviction, and it explains why he is forming the first pro-Israel Arab party, El Amal Lat’gir — “Hope for Change” in Arabic – to run in the Knesset elections on January 22, 2013.

Karinaoui gives the impression of a man who believes his time has come. A 42-year-old resident of the Bedouin city of Rahat in the Negev, he is a traditional Muslim but does not consider himself religious. Though involved in politics for nearly two decades, and exceedingly busy preparing his Knesset campaign, he is soft-spoken and patient. In fact, when we recently spoke, in a cafe at Ben Gurion Airport, he repeatedly extended our chat to accommodate my questions — despite the nudging of his staff. And his anger at Israeli Arab politicians, who he says cultivate the division between Jewish and Arab Israelis, clearly runs deep.

“All the bad things they say about Israel and its supposed ill-treatment of Arabs is a lie, a bald-faced lie,” he says intently, just moments after we’ve sat down. “Arab members of Knesset are setting a fire. They feed off of the politics of division and don’t represent the Arab public. The Arab Knesset members do nothing to educate them or advance their situation… But [at present] there is no alternative to the current leadership.”

By forming El Amal Lat’gir, which he says is loyal to Israel and concerned exclusively with social matters, Karinaoui aims to provide that alternative.

Karinaoui, who is married with five children (including a daughter currently on a national service program), is the chairman of the nonprofit organization Social Equality and National Service in the Arab Sector, which encourages Arabs to shoulder a share of the national service burden. He’s also in charge of operating computer centers in Arab cities throughout Israel as part of the Finance Ministry’s Lehava project, whose goal is to “narrow the digital gap” by providing access to the Internet in lower-income areas of the country.

“We don’t need the Arab members of Knesset to obsess over marginal matters and foreign affairs as they’ve been doing,” he declares. Arab MK Hanin Zoabi participated in the May 2010 Mavi Marmara bid to break Israel’s naval blockade of Gaza, for instance, while her colleague Ibrahim Saroor last year denounced the American “murder” of Osama bin Laden.

“We have real, pressing concerns -– 15 people living in a single house, land issues, education problems,” says Karinaoui. “We have plenty to deal with. But Arab MKs distance us from the mainstream and don’t want progress. Their leadership is the real failure.”

Karinaoui believes that given the chance, he can make a real difference. “Our leaders have defrauded us for 60 years. Give us a single Knesset mandate and we will do more for the people in four to five years than they have done in 60.”

His Knesset bid is just getting off the ground, he says, asserting that information from his canvassing indicates his list could win five to six seats — an ambitious estimate, since Arab parties mustered just 11 seats between them in the outgoing Knesset. He is working flat-out building up the party, all day every day, he says, and is putting together a team of volunteers to go door-to-door in Arab towns and villages, planning advertising in Arabic papers, arranging speeches in mosques and building a website.

Karinaoui is currently working out of the northern towns of Sakhnin, Arabe and Tamra — none of them Bedouin towns, he stresses, underlining the goal to galvanize the entire Israel Arab community. Coming from a clan estimated to number some 8,000 makes for a good basis, he says.

Star of David? No problem

But it’s not just the perceived failure of Arab politicians to deliver that drives him; Karinaoui also very much identifies with the State of Israel. He wants to see Arab Israelis fully engaged as citizens, and taking responsibility for the change that they can bring about.

“We want to prove that we are loyal and faithful citizens,” he says. “And we also need more attention and support from the state.… I’m a proud Arab and a proud Israeli too. I’m not Palestinian.… Look at Syria. Look at Egypt, look at Libya, look at Tunisia, and look at Bahrain: the problem is not Israel, it’s the Arabs.”

Karinaoui’s tack echos a recent, widely circulated op-ed in which Abdulateef Al-Mulhim, a retired commodore of the Royal Saudi Navy, asked Arabs to stop pointing the finger at Israel. But Al-Mulhim doesn’t live in Israel, a country where democracy comes hand in hand with Jewish symbols and mythology.

‘If there is more cooperation between Arabs and Jews in Israel, we will broadcast that and fight the libel in the Middle East to show the Arab public that we are part of Israel and proud of it and that we get what we deserve and this will bring immense benefits to Israel. And even the Iranians will have nothing to say’

“I have no problem with the Star of David on the flag or with the national anthem –- no problem at all,” he says. “Israel is a democracy, and I respect every country that is a democracy. Israel did not expel me. I kept my land. I have the right under the law to do whatever I want to do, even to become prime minister.

“We Arabs need to thank God that we live in this democratic country.”

Karinaoui volunteered for military service at the age of 26, and still completes his reserve duty whenever called, “because I am a citizen and I like it and this is what a citizen has to do.”

In order to give his community a voice in government, Karinaoui joined the Likud Central Committee in 1995. Within a year, he became an adviser in Prime Minister Netanyahu’s office, later advising Nathan Sharansky at the Ministry of the Interior and Tzachi Hanegbi at the Environmental Protection Ministry, under Ariel Sharon’s premiership. In the 2006 elections, he ran for Knesset in the utterly unrealistic 67th spot on the Likud list.

Why was he placed so low? Because the party ranks candidates on the basis of how many votes they’ll likely draw, he acknowledges, and the fact is that few Israeli Arabs will vote Likud. But he showed, he says, that there was room for him even within the “nationalist” Likud tent, underlining the capacity to build what he calls an Arab voice from within.

Cooperation, not corruption

Karinaoui’s straight talk can come across as refreshing in a political system that many in Israel consider steeped in excuses and evasions. And he sees in Israeli Arab politics the same pathologies –- corruption and demagoguery — that triggered the Arab Spring.

“The voter turnout in the Arab sector in Israel is a mere 47 percent… And of that 47%, the majority are fake votes!” he asserts. “I am absolutely certain that [Arab Knesset members] receive money from foreign agents — maybe Iran, Hamas, Nasrallah, for instance. The state needs to investigate this. Where do they get all their assets and funding? These people come into politics with nothing and suddenly they are driving fancy cars, they own land.

“It is exactly what is happening in the Palestinian Authority,” he states, alluding to stories of deep-seated corruption in the ruling Fatah party. “The people are hungry, and these politicians get rich.”

Noting my surprise at the fierce assertions, he adds: “I know this because I see it; I live it.”

To change the way things are done, Karinaoui proposes cooperation. “What I want is to solve our problems here, as part of Israeli society, hand in hand with the Jewish public,” he says.

Karinaoui has canvassed the Arab public’s reaction to his ideas and found, he says, that Arab Israelis, who “currently see no hope,” yearn for the kind of changes that he is proposing. He wants to embody that hope in the next Knesset. “In one month we can have a revolution, but we need help,” he says, referring to the professional public relations team and infrastructure needed to conduct an effective campaign.

The hand that feeds

Karinaoui’s call for cooperation with Israel is a departure from the rhetoric of current Arab Israeli politicians in Knesset, whose public identities are in large part Palestinian. “I am not Palestinian, that is nonsense,” he says dismissively. “These Israeli Arab politicians who hold Israeli IDs — let them try to run for office in the Palestinian Authority. Let them see if the Palestinians and Abu Mazen [Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas] receive their candidacy as ‘Palestinians.’ They could be dead the next day.”

Karinaoui is adamant about defending Israel’s record as a democratic state – and in doing so he aspires to speak for the entire Arab community.

“Israel is a wonderful place for Arabs,” he declares. “It is the only democracy in the Middle East. Look at what the Arabs are doing to each other all over the Middle East. We don’t want to focus on that anymore here. People want to advance within the State of Israel, where they were born, and, yes, under the Israeli flag.”

Karinaoui stresses his conviction that rapprochement between Jewish and Arab citizens here will lead to benefits abroad as well as at home.

“If there is more cooperation between Arabs and Jews in Israel, we will broadcast that and fight the libel in the Middle East, to show the Arab public that we are part of Israel and proud of it, and that we get what we deserve,” he argues. “This will bring immense benefits to Israel. And even the Iranians will have nothing to say.”

As for the key issue of land ownership — a subject that regularly finds Israel’s Bedouin, including those from his own home town of Rahat, at bitter odds with the Israeli government, he says simply that such disputes cannot be solved through protests and violence, and certainly not by a resort to the brandishing of Palestinian flags. Change has to be achieved via peaceful means, he says. “In war mode, someone always loses.”

Change starts at home

Aside from avowals of gratitude and loyalty to Israel, nationalistic issues don’t really concern Karinaoui. It’s the growing wealth gaps in Israel and what he sees as inadequate Israeli Arab leadership that most bother him. And he considers those problems to be urgent.

“The real terrorism is not outside; it is our leadership,” he says. “It is the crime, the poverty, the drugs and arms that plague our communities. It is Arab leaders teaching our kids to hate. That is the real terrorism. It is inconceivable that a young wife living in the Negev is separated from her husband all week because his only job is up north and hers is there, and yet that happens all the time. There are up to 12,000 teachers that are out of work,” he continues, lamenting the joblessness rate even among the educated.

But despite his outrage, Karinaoui’s reflections on Israel’s economy remain nuanced. He is not, for instance, among those who unreservedly laud Israel’s high-tech boom. “Young people today all want to make it in high-tech, to create start-ups, to make money. Everyone is looking out for themselves; not nearly enough young people are thinking of careers that benefit society, like becoming doctors, or lawyers, something to help… the weak and elderly.”

He leans in to drive home the point. “Who will take care of you and me when we are old?” he asks, pointing to the white whiskers in my beard. “They don’t have gray hair like this at our age in Saudi Arabia. It’s stress that does this. People are suffering here.”

His desire for Arabs to face their own problems is why Karinaoui sees national service (in lieu of military service) as a potential boon for his community. Yet he regards this as a case in which the deeds of successive Israeli governments hardly match their words.

“National service for all is important,” he asserts. “You help your people: women, the elderly, and children… I encourage it every day. But regardless of what they say, the state doesn’t want it because setting up the infrastructure costs money.”

The logic strikes him as myopic. “It would bring in money, by building local authorities, the proper collection of taxes, people feeling that they have a stake and an interest. And it will contribute so much to the advancement of our community that people will embrace it.”

“We need to invest in local councils, infrastructure,” he says.

Politics of division

Because Karinaoui wants his community to throw in its lot with other Israelis, he sees anti-Israel rhetoric among Israeli Arabs not just as a problem for Israel’s security, but also as a clear and present danger to his own people.

“Arab Israeli leaders are hurting the Arab public and bringing us to the brink of an abyss,” he warns. “There were celebrations in some northern Arab communities when Katyusha rockets were fired into Israel by Hezbollah [during the 2006 Second Lebanon War]. There was celebrating and the waving of foreign flags as the bombs fell. And then those bombs fell on Arabs too…. All you see is hatred. Even among Arabs, we hate each other. Why? We live in a democracy. The Arab leadership has failed and needs to resign and let the Arab public evolve. And the Arab public needs to wake up.”

He castigates Arab politicians at length for misleading their public with what he considers incendiary remarks and political games.

“They distance Arabs from the Jewish majority, and that helps them politically. And it helps parties like [Foreign Minister Avigdor] Liberman’s [Yisrael Beytenu] too. Liberman and [Arab Knesset Member Ahmad] Tibi help each other. We don’t want Israelis to hate us. We were born here; we live here; this is our country. The present Arab leadership is convincing the Arab public that the Jews are leaving this land, and will continue to leave out of despair if we continue to tire them.”

Karinaoui, by contrast, makes plain he wants the Jews to stay because, he says, “We want cooperation and the mixing of people and the development of businesses in our villages…. If we had the country that the present Arab leaders say that they want, we would have a situation like Syria here… Why are they doing so much damage to our relationship with Jewish Israelis?”

“We need an Arab Spring here in Israel,” he adds, “against our own Arab leaders.”
