Introduction

There is a practice that is becoming more widespread and increasingly embraced by governments, public sector organisations and the global corporate world as well as by individuals that is professed to be secular, non-spiritual and validated by science. You may have heard of it but unless you are involved you probably have little in depth knowledge about it other than what has been presented by its enthusiastic proponents. It is being promoted as a route to happiness, better personal well- being and better business performance as well as a tool for reducing stress. It is labelled and known as ‘Mindfulness’.

The practice is increasingly directed towards the leaders at all levels of society with some success in order to supposedly create lives with a deeper sense of peace and purpose and to positively influence the world around them. One can suppose that if this continues to take hold it may become more and more mainstream and embedded in company and organisation culture so that those who feel inclined or prefer not to follow this path could increasingly find themselves marginalised.

Time magazine majoring on the practice on its front page in the January 2014 edition headlined it ‘The Mindful Revolution’. One can see how the promised rewards of having happier citizens enjoying better wellbeing and staff who are happier, less stressed and more productive is appealing to companies and organisations apart from the appeal to the individual seeking inner peace and relief from stress.However, the bible believing Christian has a responsibility to check this practice against scripture in deciding whether it is the right path for them. The apostle Paul warns in 1 Timothy 4:1 of the doctrine of demons and deceiving spirits in the end times. He also urges us in 1 Thessalonians 5:21 to ‘test all things’. This paper seeks to do that.

Whilst anti-Semitism continues to flourish worldwide and not least in the UK let's take the better news first.

In a change of emphasis at the UN, Britain has stated it will vote against all future UN Human Rights Council resolutions on Israel's conduct in the occupied territories (Judea & Samaria) until the body ends its "disproportionate bias" against the Jewish State. This has been described as a moral breakthrough.

Boris Johnson attacked the UNHCR condemnation of Israeli bombing of Hezbullah's positions on the Golan Heights as a 'profound absurdity'. He went on "condemning Israel's policy on the Golan is preposterous when all over the region we have seen the most appalling barbarity by the Assad regime". The UK United Nations Mission said "Israel is a population of 8 million in a world of 7 billion yet since its foundation, the Human Rights Council has adopted 135 country-specific resolutions of which 68 have been against Israel!" "Syria's regime butchers people daily! We cannot accept the perverse message sent out by a Syria Golan resolution that singles out Israel, as Assad slaughters his own people".

A Whitehall source said "If you thought Stephen Harper (former Canadian PM) was pro Israel, just you wait! Mr Harper was perhaps the most vocal supporter of Israel that Israel has ever had as an ally. Praise God that Mrs May might yet rival him for the accolade!

Nick Timothy, Mrs May's Joint Chief of Staff has been described as someone who, if he was a journalist might edit the Jewish Chronicle.

May be the long standing Arab bias in our Foreign Office is yielding to a more honest and realistic agenda, promoted by Boris Johnson and Teresa May. Let's hope so. Watch this space.

Unfortunately the UK also supported 2 UNHCR resolutions last Friday, condemning Israel. One often notes that politicians speak "with forked tongue", the test will come when future votes take place.

A start to this might come when our Government stop calling Judea and Samaria, occupied territory.

The World Health Organisation absurdly singled out Israel as the only country in the world that violates health rights. Outrageous! Will the UK vote against that! If not it will lose credibility.

Scotland - A talk by an anti-Israel activist called Jackie Walker in a Church Hall was called off following the intervention of the Bishop of Edinburgh . Later Ms Walker spoke outside the Church saying opposition to a Jewish State remains a legitimate and honourable position.

Ireland - A decision to allow a conference challenging Israel's right to exist has been described as shameful by one of the City of Cork's leading political figures. The event will feature Richard Falk, who labelled Israel an apartheid State.

Counsellor Kenneth O'Flynn said "If a three day conference was held in Tel Aviv questioning Ireland's right to exist we would be outraged. It is shameful that our City Hall would give this conference a space".

Middle East Peace - Settlers in Israel fear a push for peace from Mr Netanyahu and President Trump.

Following Mr Trumps invitation to President Abbas to visit Washington, normally speaking, Mr Netanyahu might have seen warning lights but outwardly he seems calm. One settler said "Netanyahu can't say no to Trump".

It would indeed be difficult to impose on invitations by Mt Trumps friendly administration. Certainly Mr Obama was deeply hostile.

With the outstanding Nikki Haley as America's new ambassador to the UN confronting bias there, the atmosphere in Jerusalem is much more relaxed.

Mr Netanyahu has in any event always preferred to talk about peace whilst playing for time.

Israel's Broadcasting Authority - Talks about the Authorities future are deadlocked. A new Authority is scheduled to start broadcasting on April 30th. Mr Netanyahu favours the extension of the current authorities mandate but is short of votes to push this through the Knesset. It could bring the collapse of the coalition.

Yair Lapid of Israel's centrist party Yesh Atid has abandoned his party's support for a 2 State solution. A considerable change of position which has led to a move upwards in the polls.

Poland - A group in Warsaw was reported to the police last week after they burned an effigy of a Jewish woman to celebrate Spring. Later the effigy was "drowned" in the local river. How totally evil, are there no bounds?

Baroness Warsi has outraged the Jewish Community. She has called for British volunteers who volunteered to fight in Israel's army to be treated as foreign fighters and prosecuted on their return to the UK. Baroness Warsi was the first female Muslim to hold a Cabinet post and served as Foreign Office Minister. The Zionist Federation Chairman, Paul Charney said "she is driven by her own personal agenda, anti Israel, and would sooner see Israel's capability to defend itself limited than support the only true democracy in the Middle East"

Ukraine - 230 new immigrants flew into Israel last week. Many were from war torn areas One of them said "We are looking for a future for our children and it is better to do it here"

Egypt - Israel has issued a "Don't visit Egypt" call. There is, they said "concrete threat of attacks".

Venezuela - 9 converts arrived in Israel this week and held a prayer time in the arrivals hall! They have been studying since 2011 under a Rabbi.

Nicaragua and Israel are to establish diplomatic relations which will restore co-operation in Agriculture, health and education fields.

Pray for Israel's protection, thank God for Americas support for Israel and that Mr Trump will stand firm against Arab pressure.

Most of al pray for Jewish people to turn to their Messiah, a friend who will never fail them. Pray too that the Lord will reveal what he is doing as he works out his purposes and keep us looking up, studying his word so that we can understand the times.

Israel Closes Southern Border With Egypt After Warning Of Imminent Passover Terror Attack From ISIS by THE ORACLE.  Israel closed its Taba border crossing to the Sinai peninsula on Monday following warnings by its anti-terrorism office of an "imminent" militant attack there and urged its citizens to leave Egypt hours before the start of the Passover holiday, when Sinai is a popular destination for many secular Israelis. Soon after the announcement, sirens wailed in parts of southern Israel alerting residents to a rocket attack. The military said a rocket fired from Sinai exploded in southern Israel, hitting a greenhouse but causing no injuries. The Islamic State group later claimed responsibility for the attack. Yisrael Katz, Israel's transportation and intelligence minister, said in a statement Monday there was intel regarding a potential "terror attack" against tourists in the Sinai peninsula. The crossing remains open for those wanting to return from Egypt. The border closure comes a day after militants in Egypt bombed two churches, killing dozens of Christian worshippers during Palm Sunday ceremonies. In the wake of those attacks, Israel's anti-terrorism office called on all Israeli tourists in Sinai to return home immediately and asked Israelis planning trips to the Sinai to cancel. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued a statement Monday sending Israel's "condolences to the families of those who were murdered in yesterday's terrorist attacks in Egypt" and wishing a "quick and full recovery to the wounded." He said "the world must unite and fight terrorism everywhere." The Israeli government statement says that intelligence information shows "increased activity by Islamic State" militants in Sinai. It adds that with the Islamic State group losing ground in Iraq and Syria, there is renewed "motivation to carry out terror attacks in different arenas at this time." Israel called on its citizens to leave Egypt on the eve of the Passover holiday that commemorates the biblical Exodus story of the Israelites' escape from slavery in Egypt. The weeklong festival is widely celebrated in Israel even among otherwise nonreligious Jews. But southern Sinai, with its pristine beaches and Red Sea coral reefs, has traditionally been a popular Israeli tourist destination — especially for secular Israelis during the Passover holiday. Israel mostly shuts down after sundown for the holiday, as families and friends gather for Seder, the ritual multi-course meal where the story of the exodus from Egypt is discussed in detail so that the tradition is preserved throughout the generations. Leavened goods like bread and items made from yeast such as beer are banned during the holiday. Instead, Jews eat matzo — unleavened bread — to illustrate how the Israelites had no time to let their bread rise as they fled from bondage in the land of the Pharaohs. Despite the relaxing draw of Sinai, tourism there has declined since 2013, when the Egyptian military overthrew an elected Islamist president and an Islamic insurgency based in northern Sinai intensified. Rocket attacks on Israel from Sinai are relatively rare but Islamic militants there have been behind a few attacks in recent years. Theological commission requests papal acknowledgement of Mary as ‘Co-Redemptrix.’

“Mary, the Immaculate Virgin of Nazareth, through her free and feminine ‘Yes,’ consented to the conception of [the] Divine Word in her womb by the power of the Holy Spirit, and thus mediated the ‘one mediator’ (1 Timothy 2:5) to the world, bringing salvation to the human race.” So begins “The Role of Mary in Redemption,” a document of the Theological Commission of the International Marian Association (IMA) requesting that Pope Francis publicly acknowledge and honor Mary, the Mother of Jesus, as the “Co-Redemptrix with Jesus the Redeemer.”

This isn’t the first time the title has been used to describe Mary — St. John Paul II referred to her as “Co-Redemptrix” more than once. Nor is it the first time a request has been made for a papal statement on Marian co-redemption. But this may be the ideal time for such a papal statement, says Robert Fastiggi, a professor of systematic theology at Detroit’s Sacred Heart Major Seminary and a member of IMA’s Theological Commission. “I really think a papal statement on Marian co-redemption would be opportune during the centenary of the Fatima apparitions,” Fastiggi told the Register. In fact, the document itself describes the Marian apparitions at Fatima as “a powerful manifestation of Our Lady’s co-redemption in action.”

WHAT WAS MARY'S ROLE IN REDEMPTION???

How did the idea of Mary as Co-Redemptrix first come about? “The teaching of Marian cooperation with Christ in the role of redemption is there in sacred Scripture,” explained Fastiggi. “We need to see it through the eyes of faith.” And, he added, Catholic teachings about Mary have not shied away from her active role in the redemption of mankind. Lumen Gentium, for instance, states that Mary “devoted herself totally as a handmaid of the Lord to the person and work of her Son, under him and with him, by the grace of Almighty God, serving the mystery of redemption. Rightly, therefore, the holy fathers see her as used by God not merely in a passive way, but as freely cooperating in the work of human salvation through faith and obedience.” If Vatican II’s constitution on the Church touched on Mary’s role in the great work of redemption, why request a papal statement now? “Because there is a lot of confusion today,” said Fastiggi. “[Many Catholics] think Vatican II wanted to downplay Mary’s role in the redemption” of mankind. In fact, even at Vatican II there was a movement to request a definition of the Blessed Mother as Co-Redemptrix — but it was not the intention of the Council to give a complete teaching on Mariology.

That opened the door for another movement in the next century. About a decade ago, five cardinals petitioned Pope Benedict XVI to proclaim Mary the “Spiritual Mother of All Humanity, the Co-Redemptrix with Jesus the Redeemer, mediatrix of all graces with Jesus, the one mediator, and advocate with Jesus Christ on behalf of the human race.” Though the Pope did not make the requested statement, he did refer to Mary as “Mediatrix of All Graces” in a letter in the last year of his pontificate. This new request is worded in such a way that, Fastiggi said, it is “up to the Holy Spirit” how Pope Francis might interpret it: He might make a formal statement, or clarify how the Church understands Mary’s role as co-operator in the work of redemption. But will the request be successful this time? Will Pope Francis make a statement on Mary as Co-Redemptrix? “These things are often difficult to predict,” said Fastiggi, pointing out that Pope Francis has a deep devotion to the Blessed Mother and that he also sometimes states things that are “a little bit daring.”  

  

A WOMAN OF MANY TITLES!!

The Blessed Mother has a quantity of appellations and titles — and to Catholics today, they are familiar, comforting and the farthest thing from controversy. Who, for instance, would argue against calling Mary Theotokos — “God-bearer”? But centuries ago, this title was a point of contention, with some Christians arguing that Mary was the mother of the human Christ — as though his deity could be separated from his humanity. Perhaps future Catholics will also look back on arguments about the title “Co-Redemptrix” with bemusement. But in this moment, said Fastiggi, “Those of us who see the term as acceptable sometimes receive such strong reactions.

“First of all, they’re not used to the term. Second, they misunderstand the term — as if somehow Christ couldn’t redeem us on his own.” But that’s nonsense, he added. After all, God could have chosen another way to redeem the human race, but he chose to associate Mary in redemption as the Mother of the Redeemer. Additionally, there is papal precedent for the title. Pope Pius XI used the title “Mary, Co-Redemptrix,” Pope Pius X approved a prayer with an indulgence attached to it referring to Mary as Co-Redemptrix of the human race, and Pope John Paul II used the title repeatedly.

A statement on this title “would actually help ecumenism,” said Fastiggi, “for the separated brethren to see how we understand Mary’s spiritual motherhood.” That’s what Cardinal Telesphore Toppo believes, too.  A member of IMA’s Theological Commission, he is one of the five cardinals who petitioned Pope Benedict for the fifth Marian dogma a decade ago. In an interview with Zenit at that time, he explained that this title could actually facilitate interreligious dialogue. He said, “Mary’s cooperation [with God’s plan] helps all Christians and even non-Christians to understand our own required cooperation with Jesus and with his grace for our salvation.”

One of the most far-reaching and malignant of maladies in contemporary Christianity has been the gangrenous growth of what has become known as the Word of Faith (or simply Word-Faith) movement, which preaches the so-called "prosperity gospel." This, it is critically important to observe, is "another gospel" and so no Gospel at all! (Galatians 1:6-8). Not Good News for sure, but exceedingly Bad News! Many are the spiritual deviances promoted by Word of Faith adherents, but one particular practice that is the nefarious norm in such churches and which I want to focus on in this article is the iniquitous imposition of tithing.

Iniquitous? Yes, indeed! Any teaching that runs contrary to Biblical truth is iniquitous! Firstly, I must emphasize that I am in no way speaking here against the principle of giving, for righteous and proper purposes, which is something that the New Testament most certainly supports and encourages. What I am highlighting here is the legalistic and completely unscriptural application of a church members' taxation system.
