By David Chance SEOUL (Reuters) - North Korea's next step after rattling the world by putting a satellite into orbit for the first time will likely be a nuclear test, the third conducted by the reclusive and unpredictable state. A nuclear test would be the logical follow-up to Wednesday's successful rocket launch, analysts said. The North's 2009 test came on May 25, a month after a rocket launch. For the North and its absolute ruler Kim Jong-un, the costs of the rocket program and its allied nuclear weapons efforts - estimated by South Korea's government at $2.8-$3.2 billion since 1998 - and the risk of additional U.N. or unilateral sanctions are simply not part of the calculation. "North Korea will insist any sanctions are unjust, and if sanctions get toughened, the likelihood of North Korea carrying out a nuclear test is high," said Baek Seung-joo of the Korea Institute of Defense Analyses. The United Nations Security Council is to discuss how to respond to the launch, which it says is a breach of sanctions imposed in 2006 and 2009 that banned the isolated and impoverished state from missile and nuclear developments in the wake of its two nuclear weapons tests. The only surprise is that the Security Council appears to believe it can dissuade Pyongyang, now on its third hereditary ruler since its foundation in 1948, from further nuclear or rocket tests. Even China, the North's only major diplomatic backer, has limited clout on a state whose policy of self reliance is backed up by an ideology that states: "No matter how precious peace is, we will never beg for peace. Peace lies at the end of the barrel of our gun." As recently as August, North Korea showed it was well aware of how a second rocket launch this year, after a failed attempt in April, would be received in Washington. "It is true that both satellite carrier rocket and (a) missile with warhead use similar technology," its Foreign Ministry said in an eight-page statement carried by state news agency KCNA on August 31. "The U.S. saw our satellite carrier rocket as a long-range missile that would one day reach the U.S. because it regards the DPRK (Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea) as an enemy." CASH IN EXCHANGED FOR COLDER WAR The end-game for the North is a formal peace treaty with Washington, diplomatic recognition and bundles of cash to help bolster its moribund economy. "They might hope that the U.S. will finally face the unpleasant reality and will start negotiations aimed at slowing down or freezing, but not reversing, their nuclear and missile programs," said Andrei Lankov, a North Korea expert at Kookmin University in Seoul. "If such a deal is possible, mere cognition is not enough. The U.S. will have to pay, will have to provide generous 'aid' as a reward for North Koreans' willingness to slow down or stop for a while." Recent commercially available satellite imagery shows that North Korea has rebuilt an old road leading to its nuclear test site in the mountainous northeast of the country. It has also shoveled away snow and dirt from one of the entrances to the test tunnel as recently as November. At the same time as developing its nuclear weapons test site, the North has pushed ahead with what it says is a civil nuclear program. At the end of November, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said the construction of a light water reactor was moving ahead and that North Korea had largely completed work on the exterior of the main buildings. North Korea says it needs nuclear power to provide electricity, but has also boasted of its nuclear deterrence capability and has traded nuclear technology with Syria, Libya and probably Pakistan, according to U.S. intelligence reports. It terms its nuclear weapons program a "treasured sword". The missile and the nuclear tests both serve as a "shop window" for Pyongyang's technology and Kookmin's Lankov adds that the attractions for other states could rise if North Korea carries out a test using highly enriched uranium (HEU). In its two nuclear tests so far, the North has used plutonium, of which it has limited stocks. However it sits on vast reserves of uranium minerals, which could give it a second path to a nuclear weapon. "An HEU-based device will have a great political impact, since it will demonstrate that North Korean engineers know how to enrich uranium, and this knowledge is in high demand among aspiring nuclear states," Lankov said. Iran has 170 ballistic missiles aimed at Tel Aviv, many with biological warheads, WND has learned.

According to a source who served in Iran’s Intelligence Ministry and who recently defected, the Islamic regime has 170 missiles targeted at Tel Aviv from underground silos, some of which are armed with biological warheads.

The Islamic regime ruling Iran has prepared for the total destruction of Israel as well as a capability to target European capitals, he said.

As reported in the Washington Times in August, a commentary in Mashregh, the media outlet of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, confirmed that the Islamic regime not only has weapons of mass destruction but has armed its terrorist proxies with them, including Hezbollah and Islamic Jihad. The commentary warned Israel that if the fighting in Syria does not stop, an all-out attack on the Jewish state will be launched and that at zero hour, Tel Aviv will be the first city to be destroyed.

The CIA has long warned about Iran’s growing missile threat, and in 2010, Defense Secretary Robert Gates warned Congress of Iran’s capability of launching a salvo of missiles, even at European capitals. U.S. intelligence officials believe those missiles could be tipped with biological or chemical warheads.

A senior Iranian cleric, Ayatollah Ahmad Khatami, warned then that Tel Aviv “will burn to ashes,” and the regime’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, promised “the superfluous and fake Zionist regime will disappear from the landscape of geography.”

The source, talking to WND, confirmed that Iran has made significant advances on several fronts – chemical, biological, nuclear and electronic warfare – and that the regime is looking at the deterioration in Syria and the possibility of an attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities with the intent of setting Israel and the region on fire.

The regime is adamant about its support of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, the source said, and is working on its nuclear weapons program at several sites unknown to the West. The International Atomic Energy Agency, the source said, is on the wrong track by focusing only on the Natanz and Fordo nuclear sites.

There are more than 70 North Korean military advisers and scientists working in Iran on the country’s defense projects, including work on a plutonium bomb, the source said.

The Associated Press reported exclusively last week that the Islamic regime’s scientists have worked on a design for a plutonium bomb with three times the explosive force of what was used on Hiroshima.

An exclusive report by WND revealed that a secret nuclear site, code name Valayat 1, had been constructed at an underground facility in the outskirts of Najafabad in Isfahan Province. Iranian scientists there were working on a neutron detonator and implosion system along with separating plutonium for an implosion-type fission bomb.

The source also verified the existence of the Valayat 1 nuclear bomb project and the underground facility at that site.

Days ago, Secretary of the State Hillary Clinton offered bilateral talks on Iran’s nuclear program, but Ali Saeidi, the supreme leader’s representative in the Revolutionary Guards, rejected the proposal.

“In the negotiations that America pursues, there is no positive outcome for Iran as the matters between America and Iran on the strategic level are so vast there can’t be any negotiations,” Saeidi said. “America is after its dominance of the world and will never give up its nature … surely in their negotiations, they want Iran to give up its support of Hezbollah in Lebanon, resistance in Palestine, the regional movements and worldwide Shiites.”

Khamenei, in a speech to navy commanders last week on the country’s military achievements, said, “A look at the situation and the recent events in the region and the world clearly shows the upper hand of the Islamic republic of Iran.”

A close adviser to the supreme leader, Alireza Panahian, also last week in a speech widely covered by the regime, said “victory for the faithful” is close.

“Based on the recent events and the expansion of the Islamic movement in the region … and based on logical calculation, the coming is upon us and in the coming years everything will be finished,” he said, adding that with the regime’s leadership, the coming of the last Islamic Messiah, the Shiites’ 12th Imam, is soon and a certainty. Shiites believe Mahdi’s coming will be preceded by Armageddon.

GOOD NEWS REGARDING GILLY'S STEPFATHER, LESLIE WARD.

DEAR FRIENDS,

FOLKS READING MY BLOG WILL KNOW THAT GILLY'S STEP DAD, LESLIE, DIED IN HOSPITAL SOMEWHAT SUDDENLY, ALTHOUGH AGED 93, AROUND 10pm LAST WEDNESDAY. ABOUT 4 OR SO WEEKS AGO I HAD AN EXCELLENT AND EXTENDED CONVERSATION WITH LESLIE ON SPIRITUAL MATTERS, IN PARTICULAR, THE SUBJECT OF SALVATION BY FAITH AND NOT WORKS, DEATH, HEAVEN AND HELL. I COULD SEE THAT HE WAS GIVING ME SERIOUS AND UNDIVIDED ATTENTION AND I LEFT HIM WITH THE PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY TO DEAL DIRECTLY WITH GOD. HE DID NOT MENTION THE CONVERSATION WITH ME AGAIN AND WHEN I TRIED TO BE " SPIRITUAL" HE SEEMED TO DEFLECT THE CONVERSATION.

WHEN WE WERE CALLED TO HIS BEDSIDE ON WEDNESDAY PAST AND FOUND HIM IN A SEMI-COMOTOSE STATE, KNOWING THAT HEARING IS THE LAST FACULTY TO CLOSE DOWN, I READ THE SCRIPTURES AND PRAYED IN PARTICULAR I LED A PRAYER FOR LESLIE TO SILENTLY REPEAT AS HE WAS UNABLE TO SPEAK. IT WAS NOT ONLY A PRAYER OF COMMITMENT BUT A PRAYER OF COMMITMENT TO GOD AT THE TIME OF DEATH [INTERESTINGLY THE ELDERLY MAN IN THE NEXT BED BEHIND THE SCREENS SAID "AMEN" TO THE PRAYER!]

WHEN WE VISITED AGAIN IN THE EVENING GILLY SPOKE INTO HIS EAR ABOUT HIS MOTHER WHO WAS A BELIEVER, AND INSTRUCTED HIM AGAIN ON HOW TO GAIN ENTRY TO HEAVEN AND THE PRESENCE OF THE LORD JESUS. THINKING THAT HE WOULD PROBABLY PASS AWAY IN THE "WEE SMALL HOURS OF THE NIGHT" WE WENT HOME FEELING THAT WE HAD DONE ALL THAT WE COULD. LESLIE DIED LESS THAT 2 HOURS LATER. ON RECEIVING NEWS OF LESLIE'S DEATH WE WERE SADDENED AND, IN ALL HONESTY, UNCERTAIN AS TO HIS ETERNAL FUTURE AND DESTINATION.

OVER 20 YEARS AGO WE HAD BEEN IN A SIMILAR POSITION AFTER THE DEATH OF GILLY'S UNCLE JOHN. A FRIEND, WHO IS A LOCAL PASTOR, HAD BEEN VISITING JOHN IN THE HOSPICE AND TOLD GILLY AND I THAT " HE CERTAINLY BELIEVED IN JESUS". HE WAS A KIND BUT RATHER ROUGH OLD DIAMOND AND GILLY KNEW HIM WELL SO WE WERE LEFT SOMEWHAT BEWILDERED ABOUT HIS ETERNAL DESTINY.

 

WE SOUGHT THE LORD: "IF UNCLE JOHN IS TRULY SAVED, LORD PLEASE WILL YOU SPEAK DIRECTLY TO US BY BRINGING THE JOHN 3:16 "FOR GOD SO LOVED THE WORLD...." PASSAGE TO OUR ATTENTION IN SOME WAY BEFORE THE FUNERAL. LATER THAT SAME DAY,LESS THAN AN HOUR OR SO, I PULLED OUT A DAILY READINGS BOOK AND TURNED UP THE READING ALLOCATED TO THAT DAY!!!!!!!!! YOU'VE GUESSED! YES, IT WAS JOHN 3:16-17. WE PRAISED THE LORD THAT THOSE WHO CALL ON HIS NAME WILL BE SAVED.

ABOUT 5 OR 6 YEARS LATER I WAS MINISTERING TO AN OLD CHAP OF 90+ WHO WAS IN A LOCAL NURSING HOME. HE HAD BEEN A GOOD ANGLICAN ALL HIS LIFE, ATTENDING A WORSHIP SERVICE EVERY SUNDAY, LIVING A GOOD LIFE AND SOMETIMES COMING TO THE CHRISTIAN MEETINGS WHICH TOOK PLACE IN OUR RESTAURANT AT THAT TIME. BUT HE DID NOT HAVE ASSURANCE. A COUPLE OF DAYS BEFORE HE DIED I LED HIM IN THE "SINNERS PRAYER" ON HIS DEATHBED BUT AFTER HIS DEATH I FEARED THAT HE HAD ONLY PRAYED TO PLEASE ME AND THAT IT MAY NOT HAVE BEEN GENUINE.

SO WE PRAYED AGAIN AND ASKED THE LORD TO DO THE SAME THING WITH JOHN 3:16. BEFORE THE FUNERAL. AND THIS HE DID!! THIS TIME FROM AN OLD LARGE SEPIA PHOTOGRAPH OF THE CHURCH ARMY PREACHING AT PENRITH MARKET. ON THE SIDE OF THE HORSE-DRAWN CARAVAN WAS THE GOSPEL VERSE!  THERE WAS AN ADDITIONAL BLESSING TOO, BECAUSE WE RECEIVED THIS FROM THE LORD AS WE WERE LITERALLY "EN ROUTE" TO THE FUNERAL WHERE A MISUNDERSTANDING ABOUT WHO "Mr GEMMELL" WAS RESULTED IN MY NOT BEING TOLD THAT I WAS THE PREACHER UNTIL I ARRIVED AT THE CREMATORIUM DOOR WITH 5 MINUTES TO SPARE. BUT I HAD A STRONG TESTIMONY OF WONDERFUL NEWS WHICH PROFOUNDLY TOUCHED A RETIRED CHURCH MINISTER.

NOW THE CURRENT SITUATION. BEFORE DEPARTING FOR A WEEKEND CONFERENCE AT BROCKLEY HALL, SALTBURN BY THE SEA, GILLY AND I, AS PART OF OUR PERSONAL QUIET TIME ON FRIDAY, ASKED THE LORD IF HE WOULD GRACIOUSLY GIVE US THE SAME VERSE BY SOME "ALTERNATIVE" MEANS BEFORE LESLIE'S FUNERAL. I SHARED THIS WITH THE FIRST MEETING AT BROCKLEY ON FRIDAY NIGHT ALTHOUGH I DID NOT SPECIFY THAT WE HAD REQUESTED A PARTICULAR VERSE FROM THE LORD.

AFTER WE RETURNED TO OUR ROOM THAT EVENING GILLY OPENED CHRISTMAS CARDS WHICH WE HAD BEEN GIVEN, AND THE ONE FROM THE GREETHAM FAMILY, MADE BY STEPHEN GREETHAM, HAD THAT FAMOUS VERSE BEAUTIFULLY PRESENTED IN A CIRCLE AROUND THE INSIDE OF THE CARD. SO OVERJOYED, GILLY DID NOT NOTICE THAT IN ANOTHER CARD, QUITE INDEPENDENTLY, THE VERSE ON THE LEFT HAND SIDE OF THE CARD READ "FOR GOD SO LOVED THE WORLD THAT HE GAVE HIS ONLY BEGOTTEN SON, THAT WHOEVER BELIEVES IN HIM SHOULD NOT PERISH BUT HAVE EVERLASTING LIFE".

THIS SHE DISCOVERED ON THE NEXT MORNING AND REALISED THAT WE HAD A DOUBLE WITNESS...... "IN THE MOUTH OF TWO OR THREE WITNESSES IS A THING ESTABLISHED" Matthew 18:16. SO WE REJOICE IN THE CONFIDENT HOPE THAT LESLIE, BY GRACE ALONE, HAS BEEN RECEIVED INTO THE GLORIOUS ETERNAL PRESENCE OF THE LORD JESUS CHRIST, AND THAT HE WILL BE AMONGST THOSE OF WHOM PAUL WRITES, "THE DEAD IN CHRIST WILL RISE FIRST", AT THE RAPTURE OF THE CHURCH.

THANK YOU TO ALL WHO HAVE BEEN PRAYING FOR US. WE ARE COMFORTED AND ENCOURAGED. THE FUNERAL DIRECTOR WILL GIVE US A DATE FOR THE FUNERAL IN THE NEXT 24 HOURS AND WE HAVE JUST COMPLETED OUR ARRANGEMENTS WITH HIM ( HIS GREAT GRANDMOTHER WAS JEWISH, HE HAS WORKED ON A KIBBUTZ AND RECOGNISED THE MENORAH ON OUR MANTLEPIECE!). EVERYTHING WENT AS SMOOTHLY AND EFFICIENTLY AS WE WOULD HAVE WANTED; JUST AS SOME OF YOU PRAYED TODAY!!!!! I WILL CONDUCT THE FUNERAL SERVICE WITH REAL JOY AND CONVICTION ESPECIALLY DEVELOPING THE MESSAGE  FOR ANY UNBELIEVERS WHO MAY BE THERE. YOUR PRAYERS WILL BE APPRECIATED.

THE FIRST CHRISTMAS JOKE - AND IT IS SCOTTISH!!!

The old man  hangs up his phone and turns to his wife. 'Sorted!  They're coming  for Christmas - and they're paying their own  way.'

The US, along with several key allies, is prepared to launch a military intervention in Syria should the Assad government resort to using its chemical weapons against the rebels, the London Times reported on Wednesday.
A military source told the Times that US forces could be ready “rapidly, within days,” if Syrian chemical weapons were activated, and implied that the necessary forces were already in the region.
“It won’t require major movement to make action happen. The muscle is already there to be flexed,” the source said. “It’s premature to say what could happen if a decision is made to intervene. That hasn’t taken shape, we’ve not reached that kind of decision. There are a lot of options, but it [military action] could be launched rapidly, within days.”

An American-led intervention could involve US European allies like the UK, the paper said.
Countries which border Syria such as Jordan, Turkey and even Israel could also be included in a US-led military coalition, Maariv reported on Wednesday morning.
However, King Abdullah II said that Jordan “will not be party to any military intervention in Syria, which is contrary to our position, principles and national interests.”
Speaking with state-sponsored newspaper al-Rai on Wednesday, the King added that Jordan would “defend our homeland” if the kingdom faced danger.
The fate of Syria’s chemical weapon stockpiles, believed to be the third-largest in the world, is emerging as a key international issue as the civil war continues to generate chaos.
Israel is particularly concerned that Syrian chemical and biological weapons could fall into the hands of terrorists and be used against Israel.

“Together with the international community, we are closely monitoring developments in Syria regarding its stores of chemical weapons… Such weapons must not be used and must not reach terrorist elements,” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Tuesday at a forum in Jerusalem.
On Monday US President Barack Obama warned Syria that “the world is watching” and that “the use of chemical weapons is and would be totally unacceptable.” He said it would be a “tragic mistake” if Bashar Assad’s government were to use them, and warned him that if he does so, “there will be consequences and you will be held accountable.”

On Tuesday, NATO foreign ministers green-lighted a plan to install Patriot air ... as a defense measure against possible missile or chemical attacks from Syria. The defensive missile system is expected to be in place within the next several weeks.
Turkey, which has seen several fatal instances of spillover fighting along its 911-kilometer border with Syria, has been a NATO member since the 1950s. NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said on Tuesday that “we stand with Turkey” and warned against any attacks on the NATO member.
He said he would expect “an immediate reaction from the international community” if chemical weapons were to be used by Syria, a possibility he called “completely unacceptable.”

American officials said Wednesday, Dec. 4, that they believed bombs had been made ready with sarin gas, but not yet loaded onto fighter planes and Assad had not issued the “go” order. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton warned President Assad once again that he would be crossing “a red line” if he used nerve gas against the country’s rebels. But “there’s little the outside world can do to stop it.” In answer to US allegations, Syrian spokesmen reiterated that their government would not use chemical weapons against its own people.
This statement leaves wide open the possible use of lethal gas against the countries supporting the Syrian rebels, such as Turkey and Jordan. And indeed, the Assad regime has in the past referred to “external enemies” as possible targets of chemical warfare.
This locution undoubtedly covers Israel. Yet against the flood of information and warnings coming from the United States, Israel is strangely silent and its media are officially discouraged from tracking the Syrian chemical weapons menace.

Surprise was voiced in some Israeli defense and military quarters, when the prime minister, the defense minister and other key ministers traveled to Europe Wednesday for visits to Prague and Berlin, at a time when Israel’s northern border with Syria might be targeted for a chemical attack. Although it was only a 48-hour absence - they return Friday - Binyamin Netanyahu and Ehud Barak are holding to an outward attitude of coolly controling the situation, in contrast to the Turkish government which has prepared itself for possible attack - and not only with defensive measures. Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu remarked Wednesday that the Syrian regime has 700 missiles whose location, storage method and holders are no secret to Ankara. The USS Eisenhower Strike Group transited the Suez Canal from the Persian Gulf Saturday, Dec. 1, sailing up to the Syrian coast Tuesday in a heavy storm, with 8 fighter bomber squadrons of Air Wing Seven on its decks and 8,000 sailors, airmen and Marines. The USS Eisenhower group joins the USS Iwo Jima Amphibious Ready Group which carries 2,500 Marines.
Facing Syria now are 10,000 US fighting men, 70 fighter-bombers and at least 17 warships, including the three Iwo Jima amphibious craft, a guided missile cruiser and 10 destroyers and frigates. Four of these vessels are armed with Aegis missile interceptors. This mighty US armada brings immense pressure to bear on the beleaguered Assad regime after it survied an almost two-year buffeting by an armed uprising. Its presence indicates that the United States now stands ready for direct military intervention in the Syrian conflict when the weather permits. Left behind in the Persian Gulf is just one US aircraft carrier, the USS Stennis and its strike group.

Welcoming NATO’s decision Tuesday, Dec. 4, to deploy Patriot missile batteries in Turkey, Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said Wednesday: “The protection from NATO will be three dimensional; one is the short-range Patriots, the second is the middle-range Terminal High Altitude Air Defense [THAD] system and the last is the AEGIS system, which counters missiles that can reach outside the atmosphere.” debkafile’s military sources: While the Patriot is land-based and will be deployed on the Turkish-Syrian border, the THAD and the Aegis have just reached the Syrian coast aboard the USS Eisenhower strike group. “With this integrated system,” said Davutoglu, Turkey will have maximum protection.”
He added: “The Syrian regime has 700 missiles,” and their location, storage method and holders are no secret to Ankara. This was the first time Ankara had made threats to destroy Syrian missiles, including any carrying chemical warheads.

Just a brief note to let you know that Gilly's stepfather, Leslie Ward, died peacefully last evening.

He has been quite ill recently, and we have transported him to and from hospital on many occasions, but sadly he passed away last night.

Gilly and I have had many conversations with him about the Lord recently, and he did say that he believed that Jesus died on the cross  for him, and we trust in the Lord as we commend Leslie to Him.

There is growing concern in Israel that the faltering regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad will use its stockpiles of chemical weapons as a last resort. According to a report in The Times of London and Maariv, Israel would take part in a joint military effort against the weapons of mass destruction, together with armed forces from the U.S., Britain, Jordan and Turkey. The report in The Times said some 75,000 commandos would take part in a massive ground operation against the Syrian WMD arsenal.

A senior intelligence official, meanwhile, told Israel's Channel 2 TV news that Israel's border with Syria on the Golan Heights could "soon become the most active border we have, more than Gaza and Egypt." The official added that the only thing keeping Assad in power was the Syrian Air Force, but that even this power was being eroded as rebels down more and more warplanes and helicopters. "The Syrian Air Force is the only thing standing in the way of rebel victory. Assad's situation worsens in direct correlation with the situation of his air force, which is losing one to two planes a day and it cannot sustain such a rate of attrition. The collapse of the Syrian Air Force will lead to a certain collapse of the regime in Damascus. Assad's days are numbered, and in the chaos that will replace him, extremists will heat up the Golan border," the official said.

The intelligence official told Channel 2 TV that global jihad groups have been preparing near the border with Israel, and are "stockpiling huge amounts of lethal weapons for a fight with Israel."

"The main problem is not the local rebel groups but fighters coming from outside Syria. Hundreds of fighters have begun streaming into Syria from Jordan and Iraq. They come from countries like Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Libya, and many other countries. We're talking about very dangerous people with experience fighting the U.S. army in Iraq as well as fighting the regime in Libya. We estimate that there are between 3,000 to 4,000 rebel fighters belonging to radical Salafist groups who all belong under the al-Qaida umbrella," the official said.

"Some of these fighters are fighting against the Assad regime, but there are groups that have begun deploying near our border and are stockpiling weaponry. There are now several hundred jihadis deployed along the border with Israel in the area of Kuneitra, Bir Ajam, Barika, and some other areas. The assessment is that they possess quantities of weapons that are not being used against Assad's army and that it will be Israeli soldiers who will be faced with this weaponry. We are certain that they have MILAN, Metis-M, and Kornet anti-tank missiles, as well as shoulder-fired SA-18 anti-aircraft missiles, which are particularly problematic," the intelligence official said.

The unusually candid assessment from the intelligence official continued with him saying that the jihadis were stockpiling "huge amounts of light arms, bullets, sniper rifles, and ready-to-use explosives."

"We expect these rebels to stockpile a large amount of rockets, a situation which will return the northern Israeli communities into the line of fire. We assess that once the foreign rebels have finished fighting Assad's army they will all turn their attention to the border with Israel. There is no question about it. Once the Assad regime falls, we will start seeing incidents on our border. I assess that it will start with a trickle of incidents, like we see on the Egyptian border, and further down the line we'll start seeing the firing of anti-tank missiles at IDF vehicles, roadside bombs against patrols, and these are only the incidents I can reveal. I believe we will see much worse things," the official said.

The official added that there was increasing coordination between jihadi groups in the Golan Heights, Sinai and the Gaza Strip, and that Syrian rebels were likely to fire on Israeli forces along the Golan border to further draw them into confrontation with the Syrian army.

"It really doesn't matter who takes over on the day after Assad falls. All the signs show that the situation is not going in a positive direction as far as Israel is concerned," the official said.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Tuesday Israel is closely tracking developments relating to chemical weapons in Syria, whose regime has been warned against using them in the country's uprising.

"Along with the international community, we are closely following developments in Syria related to its chemical weapons stockpiles," Netanyahu said in a statement from his office.

"I heard President Obama's important remarks on the subject and we see things the same way," said Netanyahu. "We believe these weapons must not be used and must not fall into the hands of terrorist elements."

The White House and its allies are weighing military options to secure Syria's chemical and biological weapons, after U.S. intelligence reports show the Syrian regime may be readying those weapons and may be desperate enough to use them, U.S. officials said Monday.

U.S. President Barack Obama, in a speech at the National Defense University on Monday, pointedly warned Assad not to use the weapons.

"Today I want to make it absolutely clear to Assad and those under his command: The world is watching," Obama said. "The use of chemical weapons is and would be totally unacceptable. And if you make the tragic mistake of using these weapons, there will be consequences and you will be held accountable."

NATO allies expressed "grave" concern on Tuesday about reports that the Syrian government may be preparing to use its chemical weapons, NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said.

The military alliance agreed on Tuesday to deploy Patriot surface-to-air missiles to Turkey to protect it from any spillover of the civil war in neighboring Syria.

"The NATO ministers unanimously expressed grave concern about reports that the Syrian regime may be considering the use of chemical weapons," Rasmussen told a news conference. "Any such action would be completely unacceptable and a clear breach of international law."
